Ranney School’s third, fourth and fifth graders received an important lesson in money management on Tuesday, April 28, when financial advisor and Ranney alumnus Marc Pico ‘92 returned to campus to share his expertise about becoming a “financially fit kid.” A certified financial planner and investment banker, Mr. Pico explained the importance of saving, spending, and investing money wisely in order to achieve greater independence and realize goals. Using PowerPoint slides, Mr. Pico described some basic financial concepts, including why banks charge interest for loans, how the stock market works and why it is important to give back to the community through charitable contributions. Many of the students already seemed to have a grasp of the issues. Questions ranged from, “How many stock certificates can you purchase at one time?” to “Is this a Bear market or a Bull market?” and “What caused the stock market to crash?”

Lower School Head Patricia Marshall says programs such as this do more than help students learn to count pennies or balance a checkbook. “At Ranney, a core value is service to community and investment towards a stronger future. This type of assembly helps our students make the connection between the work ethic and earning, and the larger global concept of financial stability and security.”
