Ranney parents, family and friends gathered in Panther Hall Gallery Friday evening May 1 for the opening of the Advanced Placement Studio Art exhibition, featuring works by this year’s graduating AP Studio Art students. The collection of paintings and prints represents the culmination of years of study by each student, as well as a dedicated effort this past year to develop a series of twelve thematic works. The exhibition features acrylic paintings on canvas by Dana Cohen, Margaux D'Onofrio, Kimberly DiMaggio, Daniel Egan, Alyson Halpern, Allison Lyttle, Sasha Sickles, Joanna Simon, and Alyssa Stavola and intaglio prints by Jessica Rothberg.

The AP Studio Art course is the only AP course offered by the College Board that is performance based. Students begin work on their AP Studio Art portfolio in 11th grade in the Honors Advanced Portfolio class, undertaking 12 works of art that demonstrate their proficiency in a wide range of media and subjects. They complete the final portion of portfolio in senior year, creating 12 works of art all related by a common theme of their own choosing. At the conclusion of their studies, students submit five works of art to the College Board for the judges to see, while submitting the remaining works through digital slides.

Art Department Chair Kate Greenberg says enrollment in Ranney’s visual arts program continues to grow and expand each year. This year, Ranney art students won several countywide competitions including the Monmouth Festival of the Arts and the Teen Arts Festival, and the Art Department inducted its charter members into a new chapter of the National Art Honor Society.
