Undeterred by the threat of rain, Ranney’s Varsity Baseball team took the field last evening, May 6, against Monmouth Academy at First Energy Park in Lakewood, home of the single A minor league Lakewood BlueClaws. Over 150 spectators, predominantly Ranney supporters, took advantage of one of the first rain-free evenings in two weeks and rooted on the Panthers to a 13 to 3 win. An enthusiastic group of 30 Middle Schoolers even took the Ranney fan bus from school to the game to help cheer on their fellow students.

Ranney dominated the game from the start, scoring four runs in the first inning and five in the second. Ninth grader Evan Glazman controlled the game from the mound, striking out three in two innings to allow the Panthers to jump out to the early lead without Monmouth Academy getting on the scoreboard. Evan helped his own cause by pounding out three hits, and driving in three runs. Paul Allegra, twelfth grade, supported Evan by hitting in three of four at bats, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Eleventh grader Ben Briggs came in relief of Evan, pitching two innings, while Ed Allegra, ninth grade, saw his first pitching action of the season. Ed also closed out the game with a big hit over the head of the right fielder, forcing the ten run mercy rule.

At the end of the game the Lakewood grounds crew asked for the assistance of both teams in covering the infield with a tarp to protect it from the oncoming rainstorm. Players from both teams gladly obliged, taking off their shoes and putting on sneakers to make sure the tarp wouldn’t get ripped. Then both teams followed the lead from the grounds crew in spreading the tarp over the field. Now that’s teamwork and sportsmanship!
