Tinton Falls Police Bring Teen Awareness Program to Campus

Ranney juniors and seniors extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the Tinton Falls police force and their associates for bringing their valuable teen drunk driving awareness program “Rude Awakening” to the Upper School campus yesterday. Tinton Falls Police Captain Joseph Milano and his officers provided special goggles, designed to simulate impaired driving by blurring vision and upsetting depth perception. The students then attempted to navigate a golf cart through a maze of red traffic cones. When the goggles came off, many of them were surprised to learn they had knocked down more than few cones, even though they were driving at speeds of fewer than five miles per hour. The students also laughed at their own failed attempts to walk a straight line, pick up dropped car keys or even make a basketball basket while wearing the goggles. Captain Milano says the exercise is the best way to show, rather than tell teens about the dangers of drinking and driving, especially at this time of year, as teens get ready for Prom and graduation. The daylong program, sponsored by the newly formed student organization THINK, also featured presentations by a trauma room nurse, a substance abuse counselor and the Tinton Falls Municipal Prosecutor Michael Fitzgerald.
