On May 15, 51 talented Middle School students participated in the Music in the Parks Festival, along with students from 10 other middle and high schools from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Participating schools were graded and ranked according to school size and ensemble classification.

The day began with an adjudicated performance by the Middle School Chorus, under the direction of Lillianne Torrente, at the Ramada Inn & Suites, located in Toms River. The chorus dazzled audience members with solid harmonies and “white glove” choreography. The ensemble groups then proceeded to the Strand Theatre in Lakewood, where the Middle School Band and String Orchestra performed for adjudicators. Being on the stage of the Strand Theatre may have been both exciting and a little intimidating for the Middle School students, but they performed superbly. First, the Middle School Band, directed by Kevin Cotter, took the stage, enthusiastically performing for audience and judges. They were followed by the Middle School String Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Dorothy Sobieski, who charmed guests with their musical selections featuring beautiful violin duets.

At days’ end, students were rewarded with a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure, and spent the afternoon enjoying the rides with friends and students from other schools. The day culminated in an awards ceremony at the park where performance results were announced and celebrated by all.

Ranney’s Middle School Chorus students received a 1st Place trophy and a rating of Excellent from judges, having competed against Arlington Middle School, Poughkeepsie, New York; Eastern Christian Middle School, Wyckoff, New Jersey; and the Peck School, Morristown, New Jersey. The Middle School Band received a 2nd Place trophy and a rating of Good, after competing against Eastern Christian Middle School. The Middle School String Orchestra received a rating of Superior, bringing in the highest score for Ranney School and earning the rank of 1st Place against Eastern Christian Middle School.

In congratulating students and their teachers, Kathleen Deeken, Head of Middle School said, “It was a job well done! The ensembles have been working very hard for their adjudicated performances, and under skillful guidance, they have excelled. After last week’s performances at the Middle School Awards Ceremony it was clear that they were destined for success. I know that good work will continue next year. Kudos to all!”
