Colors of the World and Carnival Day on May 21 looked like an opening ceremony for the Olympic Games, as Lower School students filed onto the Karagianakis Field and marched around the Guidone Track, carrying the flags of their “adopted” countries.
Throughout the day, students in each division took part in a variety of events. Upper and Middle Schoolers competed for points in the Country Competitions with students representing China, India, Egypt, Russia, Israel, Greece, Colombia, Kenya, Spain and France displaying their country’s flags, maps, collages, artifacts, music and costumes. There were also opportunities for students to create chalk drawings on the sidewalk, participate in a Quiz Bowl and compete in an “International Idol” contest.
One of the highlights of the day was a special performance in RSPA Panther Hall by Ballet Hispanico. Students in all three divisions were dazzled by the troupe of professional dancers as they performed traditional dances like the flamenco and salsa, as well as more contemporary dances that infused traditional Latin dance and ballet, with modern forms, like jazz and hip hop.
There were also amusement rides and lots of carnival food, along with an international buffet featuring epicurean specialties from around the world. A soccer tournament topped off the day’s festivities, bringing to a close very exciting Colors of the World and Carnival Day.
