On Thursday, October 1, friends of Ranney School enjoyed the crisp autumn weather and brilliant sunshine on the grounds of Navesink Country Club in Middletown as they gathered for the 14th Annual Golf Classic and Inaugural Tennis Tournament. Serving as the first event of Ranney’s 50th Anniversary Kickoff Celebration and Homecoming weekend, the day raised more than $25,000 in direct support of Ranney’s student programs and gave parents, alumni and friends a chance to support the school in a spirited and social atmosphere.
A full field of 20 teams took to the fairways for a team scramble competition during the Golf Classic portion of the day. The winning foursome shot a 61, finishing 11 under par, and included Richard Ryan, Len Belezza, trustee Tom Karagianakis and alumnus John Jaravata ’01, who won the closest to the pin competition. Second place went to the team of Paul Zaitchick, Bill Bauer, Mark Tirondola and Anthony Ventola, who shot a 63 on the day.
For the first time, players had the opportunity to participate in a putting contest and a beat the pro contest. The putting contest, held on the practice green prior to the 10:30 a.m. shotgun start, gave participants three shots to make a 35-foot putt, which past parent Doug Widman made to win the contest. The beat the pro competition saw golfers tee off against Ranney’s own professional golfer, alumnus Charlie Kromann ’01, on a par three hole. Six participants were able to beat the pro and were entered into a drawing for a $500 pro shop gift certificate.
On the tennis courts, 18 parents and friends paired up for a round robin doubles competition. The winning combination of Wallace Toto and trustee Kristen Gerhard finished with 19 wins, while runners up Lynn Serrapica and Lee Chamas finished with 15 wins.
Following the events, participants and sponsors gathered under a tent for the awards reception. Ranney School would like to extend a very special thank you to all those who sponsored the event and the volunteers who made the day a success. The Golf Classic Committee, including trustees Jack McEnery and Tom Frystock and parents Tom Gavin, Rob Johnson, Vijay Parikh and Bob Parker, have worked since last fall recruiting sponsors and participants for the event and were an integral part of the day.
