Ranney Lower School students got a first hand lesson in fire safety and emergency medical services thanks to a recent visit from Tinton Falls Fire Engine #1 and the Tinton Falls Emergency Medical Services-South.
As part of Fire Safety Week, pre-K students and kindergartners were taught basic fire safety lessons in the classroom before meeting and talking with EMT members and firemen from the Borough of Tinton Falls. Ranney teachers spent the past week instructing students on what to do in case of a fire, the importance of smoke detectors in the home and school, exit drills and stop-drop-and-roll techniques. Students came ready to learn more about the do’s and don’ts if there is a fire from fireman David Boehning and Sean Conover as they eagerly climbed aboard the bright red fire truck proudly wearing their handmade paper fire chief hats.
Said David Boehning, “We’re here to reinforce what these youngsters have already learned in the classroom and answer any questions they might have on what do in case of a fire.”
Students also learned about the important role of emergency medical services from President Woody Purdon who showed Ranney students the inner workings of an ambulance. “We want to get kids accustomed to what an ambulance is so they won’t be afraid if they ever see or hear one coming down the road.”
After their visit was over, both students and teachers felt a little more secure knowing that if there was a fire or medical emergency, the valuable lessons they learned both in and out of the classroom would help them to help themselves, as well as others.
