Varsity Tennis Wins 1st Prep State Team Championship

The Varsity Girls’ Tennis team competed in the Prep B State Finals on Octiber 28 and won Ranney’s first-ever Team Championship title.

The Varsity Girls’ Tennis team competed in the Prep B State Finals on October 28 and won Ranney’s first-ever Team Championship title. Two Singles players and two Doubles teams represented Ranney at the tournament. Although Ranney topped Gill, the two teams share the title since Gill also competed against and beat Rutgers Prep. The team title was determined by total matches won, not by head-to-head results. Ranney and Gill each finished with 12 victories.

Establishing another school record, Laura Church won her 4th Prep State title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at 3rd Singles. At 1st Doubles, Melissa Cantave and Natalie Cantave won their first State Championship with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Competing for the 2nd Doubles title, with the team championship on the line, Grace Farren and Mariel Pearl came back from a 4-1 deficit to win the first set 6-4. The second set went to the opponent. In the third set, down 5-3, they denied two match points and then won four straight games to earn their first State Championship. Their win also earned the Panthers the team title. Diane Scavelli received the runner-up trophy at 2nd Singles with a 6-2, 6-3 loss in the finals. And at 1st Singles, Charlotte Fleming, was defeated by Rutgers Prep in the semifinals.

Congratulations to Varsity Tennis, Sectional and Prep State Champs, on an outstanding season!
