Ranney Students Celebrate “La Semaine du Francais”

It was a feast to behold as Ranney School students enjoyed crepes, chocolate mousse, crudités, and quiche, among other delicacies during their annual celebration of “La Semaine du Francais” or National French Week.

Organized by Ranney Middle School French teacher Marianne Moran, along with Upper School French teacher Helen Kent, 42 students took part in an after school activity of French culture and festivities that included French music, cuisine, and, yes, even a French film. Throughout the week-long celebration, students also completed various projects on francophone history, literature and cultures.

Since 1999, the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) has been sponsoring this annual celebration of French language and francophone cultures. The celebration is designed to increase the understanding and appreciation of the francophone world by finding interesting and entertaining ways of looking at how French touches our lives, as well as learn about the dozens of countries and millions of people who speak this beautiful and romantic language.

Ranney students have been formally celebrating National French Week since 2003. According to Madame Moran, this year’s celebration became a transitional activity for Ranney 5th graders who joined Middle and Upper School students in the Dining Hall where they had fun listening to French music from around the globe. Students also participated in a raffle with many French themed prizes and capped off the fun-filled afternoon with a screening of Madagascar 2 in, what else, French!!
