More than 200 students, Beginners through second grade, sat ‘still’ for close to an hour as they watched a special performance of Cinderella on Monday, December 14 in Panther Hall.
Make no mistake, these youngsters weren’t bored – they were just completely mesmerized by an enchanting presentation of the classic fairy tale by the award-winning marionette company, Tanglewood Marionettes. Judging by the countless ‘ooh’s’ and ‘aah’s,’ Ranney’s youngest students gave the performance a positive review as they watched in awe as brightly colored puppets glided across the stage.
From gentle Cinderella to the bumptious step sisters and the charming Prince, this telling of the classic tale was set in the 18th century and featured a dozen lavishly costumed 30” marionettes. The story of Cinderella unfolded as the pages of a giant book opened to reveal each beautifully painted setting with one scene that “popped” right out the book much to the delight of Ranney children.
Not only did Cinderella keep Ranney youngsters smiling throughout the morning, they also learned about the fine art of marionettes or string puppets during a question and answer period following the performance. First graders from Ms. Miller’s class got a head start on puppetry and made their own puppets in anticipation of the Tanglewood Marionettes presentation.
