The Ranney Varsity Girls’ Basketball team captured their eighth Panther Classic Championship, the first since 2006, with a 28-19 win over Calvary Academy.
Senior forward Taryn Pontolillo scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and two steals to lead Ranney to victory. Pontolillo scored eight points in a 12-0 third quarter as Ranney stretched a 12-10 lead to 24-10. Calvary attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter only to be turned away by the Panthers’ strong defensive effort. Sophomore Alexa Volpe chipped in seven points and six rebounds. And, senior Taylor Swanner added four points, six rebounds and four steals. Junior Alexis Wyckoff held Calvary leading scorer Ashley Whitehead to four points as the Panthers’ defense led the way to victory.
Taryn Pontolillo was named the 2009 Panther Classic MVP for outstanding effort in both tournament games. Sophomore Alexa Volpe and freshman Brynn Bresnahan were named to the All-Tournament team for the Panthers. Also, from Calvary, Ashley Whitehead and Alyssa Dvorak were selected as All-Tournament team members.
