Freshmen Alexandra Seneca and Ashleigh Shay have recently had their poems printed in the Creative Communication anthology, A Celebration of Poets. Alexandra’s submission was entitled “A Moment’ and Ashleigh’s poem was called “Boston.”
As part of their award, Alexandra and Ashleigh are also eligible to receive additional awards if their poems are chosen as part of Creative Communication’s “Top Ten Poems.” Creative Communications is an organization devoted to the promotion of writing, teaching and appreciation of student writing.
Both students are members of Ranney’s Creative Writing Club which began this year. According to its Faculty Advisor Nicole Martone, students have the opportunity to alternate between silent writing and workshop periods. During writing sessions, students respond to a prompt in poetic, prose, or creative essay form. They may also choose to write about a topic of their choice if the prompt does not inspire them. During workshop sessions, students are encouraged to share their creative writing in small groups. The Creative Writing Club works closely with RSVP, Ranney’s Upper School literary magazine, and has had several works accepted by RSVP during the first semester.
Inspired by the recent success of Alexandra and Ashleigh, other members of the almost 25-member Creative Writing Club plan to enter the same contest in the spring.
