The Middle School eighth grade French classes each produced a one minute public service announcement podcast which encourages their peers to learn a language. The students from each class collaborated on the creation of the messages, they wrote their own scripts, and filmed their videos under the direction of their teacher, Marianne Moran. The Lower School computer technology teacher, Maureen Wood formatted the podcasts and prepared them for submission to ACTFL. The video titles are “Languages Open Doors” and “Love Languages Love Life”.
Students at all grade levels throughout the country were invited by ACTFL to submit student created video podcasts, focusing on promoting life-long learning of foreign languages. The podcasts were then judged for originality and creativity by a panel of judges. The Ranney students created their podcasts using iMovie software, which is available in Ranney’s two MAC labs, located in the Lower School Academic Complex and Upper and Middle School Academic Complex.
ACTFL , the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, is an organization that advocates for the importance of language learning as a way to unite communities around the world. This contest celebrates February 2010 as Discover Languages month, part of an ongoing public awareness campaign; which focuses on the need for all students to have the opportunity to learn a second language.
Now that the Ranney students have been notified that their podcasts are contest finalists, the next step in the competition will involve a judging period. The public can visit the ACTFL web site to view all the podcast entrees and vote for their favorite. The winning podcasts will be posted on the ACTFL web site and cash and product prizes will be available to the students who produce the winning entrees.
