For Ranney students, the spirit of giving back to those in need didn’t end with the holiday season. In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, students have been putting their hearts and hands together in an effort to provide much needed support for those in need. Just recently, students in all three divisions launched a variety of fundraising initiatives to raise money and awareness for the Haitian relief effort.
Lower School:
A bake sale, hosted by the 4th grade, was held on January 22, raising almost $800. Then on January 28, a school-wide donation Dress Down Day in Blue, Red and White (the colors of the Haitian Flag) raised an astounding $2,120 from just Lower School students. Funds from both events will be sent to the International Red Cross before Presidents’ weekend to support the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund. The Fingerprints Club, an international diversity program directed by foreign language teachers Cynthia Ni, Nancy Rosenthal, and Jeanette Cordero, created a geographical and cultural slide show for the grades 2-5 assembly held last week, to raise awareness about Haiti as a country.
Middle School:
Middle School students also participated in the Dress Down Day, raising over $1,100, and in the next couple of weeks students will hold a stuffed animal collection for Haitian children. In addition, Middle School students hosted a special presentation about Haiti in Panther Hall for the Lower School.
Upper School:
Upper School students banded together for two Dress Down Days: the school-wide event, which raised $1,700, and a second Blue, Red and White day that raised $1,350. Their efforts resulted in a large donation being sent to the American Red Cross to provide immediate needs for food, water, shelter and medical services.
Ranney students are always encouraged “to reach out to others and to see service and social commitment as fundamental aspects of a purposeful life.” Through these volunteer efforts for Haiti, we see that character development and a social conscience continue to be integral to a Ranney education.
