On Saturday, February 27, the Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society held its 2nd Annual Social, “Dinner and a Concert”. Twelve student members of Ranney’s Chapter 4410 began the evening with dinner at the Broadway Grill and Restaurant in Red Bank, where conversations ranged from favorite pop stars like Lady Gaga to best menu choices. Following dinner, the students and faculty walked to the Count Basie Theatre on Monmouth Street to hear the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra present “Best of…Fairy Tales”, featuring music originally inspired by fairy and folk tales, such as Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite, Prokofiev’s Cinderella Suite, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Debussy’s Children’s Corner Suite, Dvorak’s The Noon Witch, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, Griffes’ The White Peacock, and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite. To help set the mood, short descriptive narratives were offered for the benefit of the audience.
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra was lead by Elizabeth Schulze, music director of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the Flagstaff Symphony, who helped transport the audience to exotic realms and colorful musical landscapes with her expert and almost dance-like conducting. Overall, the evening was a delight for students and faculty alike.
