Ranney students Ross Bernstein and Diane Scavelli have been chosen to be among a select group of students to participate in the Delaware Valley Science Fair to be held at Drexel University on April 6.
Both students, who are members of Ranney’s Science Research Club, recently attended the Jersey Shore Science Fair at Stockton State College and successfully earned entry to the Delaware Science Fair for their outstanding presentations. With more than 600 hundred projects on display, Diane, a Ranney junior, placed 2nd and Ross, a senior, placed 3rd in the Chemistry division. Diane’s project, “The Chemistry of Winemaking” explained the fermentation of grape sugars to alcohol. Ross’ project, “The Chemistry of Magic,” dealt with the chemicals involved in magic tricks and the misdirection of visual energy.
According to Gerald Gance, Ranney chemistry teacher and faculty advisor of the Science Research Club, “Diane and Ross represent the knowledge, imagination and creativity of all students at Ranney Upper School.”
Bernstein and Scavelli were among students from Atlantic, Cape May, Monmouth and Ocean counties who competed against one another in hopes of gaining access to the invitational only regional science fair, the Delaware Science Fair.
Founded in 1949, the Delaware Valley Science Fair is one of the oldest and largest fairs in the United States. A high school competition, the event includes students from 65 countries and 48 states. Students from Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware compete to win up to $1 million in cash prizes, as well as a chance to win an all expense paid trip to the Intel- the International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, California in May.
