Fresh from spring break, Lower School students spent their first day back at Ranney with a special visit by popular children’s author Wendy Pfeffer. Students from grades K-5 gathered in three separate sessions in Panther Hall on Monday, April 12 to listen to Pfeffer talk about the inspiration for her more than 30 children’s science books and to share her real-life and entertaining tales on the joy of writing.
A former elementary school teacher who now writes full-time, Pfeffer charmed and inspired Ranney students to discover the joy of reading, writing and researching. Among the author’s many titles are What’s It Like to Be a Fish, Tadpole to Frog, Dolphin Talk and A New Beginning: Celebrating the Spring Equinox, to name a few. Several of Pfeffer’s books have captured the “Best Science Book of the Year” award.
In a lively and interactive presentation, Pfeffer engaged Ranney’s youngest students in a spirited and informative discussion on how her books progress from an original idea, to the research process, the editor’s desk, the illustrator’s easel, and finally to the delight of seeing her words in print.
Judging by their enthusiastic questions, Ranney’s Lower School students’ were motivated to explore reading, writing and researching both in and out of the classroom.
