Alumni Return for Spring Weekend

Over the weekend of May 21-22, Ranney School alumni returned to the shore to reconnect with one another and to honor their own.

Over the weekend of May 21-22, Ranney School alumni returned to the shore to reconnect with one another and to honor their own.

On Friday evening, more than 65 alumni, faculty and friends met at The Downtown in Red Bank to celebrate at the annual spring reception. Friends celebrated each other’s college graduations and personal milestones, enjoying being back with one another and reminiscing about their days in the Barn or the Dining Hall. Friday evening also presented the opportunity to recognize this year’s class of inductees to the Panther Athletics Hall of Fame, including 30-year veteran of the Ranney Athletic Department, Mr. Emmett Walling. This year’s class will be inducted officially on Thursday, May 27, during the Sports Convocation in Panther Hall.

Eugenie B. Edwards Dedication

On Saturday morning, members of the Class of 1988 along with other alumni gathered to pay tribute to the memory of Eugenie B. Edwards ’88 as her mother and step-mother joined Ranney faculty and friends in dedicating the center court of the Kelly Tennis Center to Genie’s memory.

Genie was known as an effervesant young woman who also enjoyed a reputation as one of the most formidable female tennis players in Ranney athletic history.  After graduating from Wheaton College in 1992, Genie pursued her love of travel and lived in London and Australia before working at Channel 13 in New York City as an outreach coordinator.  Upon her death in March, 1997, there was an outpouring of contributions to Ranney School to create a memorial in her name.

Today, The Eugenie B. Edwards Spirit of Tennis Scholarship awards a $500 savings bond each year to the senior girl who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, team spirit and enthusiasm for the sport of tennis and Ranney School.  Lauren Betesh, who spoke at the ceremony, was the first recipient of The Eugenie B. Edwards Spirit of Tennis Scholarship.   Now, another fitting memorial carries Genie's name - center court of the Kelly Tennis Center.

The touching ceremony was followed by an alumni basketball game in the GPA and a barbecue at the Crescent, outside of the Dining Hall.
