Middle School students had a busy week as they took part in several activities that included International Field Day, as well as the annual Recognition Assembly where they honored the academic achievements and leadership activities of their students.
Middle School International Field Day
Designed to celebrate diversity and promote cultural awareness, this year’s International Field Day on Thursday, May 20 was a resounding success.
Under bright blue skies, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders enjoyed several outdoor activities that promoted teamwork and a sense of community by providing students, as well as faculty, an afternoon of physical activity and fun. With World Cup fever just around the corner (and because the 6th grade is studying South Africa in Geography class), each advisee group was assigned a country participating in the World Cup from the world’s various regions and sported one of the country’s colors for the day. Country assignments spanned the globe from Uruguay and Denmark to Algeria to Japan.
This year’s Field Day included three separate events: World Cup Soccer; Field Events (Obstacle Course, Hula Hoop Pass and Over Under); and track events (Scooter Relay, Kangaroo Relay, and Power Walk Relay). The day concluded with the Eighth Grade vs. Faculty Kickball Game at Softball Field.
Middle School Recognition Assembly
Middle School students were honored on Friday, May 21 in a recognition assembly that spanned their accomplishments in a wide variety of areas that included the performing arts, forensics, creative writing, Student Council, Science Olympiad, and mathematics.
In his opening remarks, Middle School Head David Fischer explained this year’s ceremony was an opportunity to “reflect on our year in the Middle School and the things we have accomplished.” “Today,” he said, “we are recognizing not just participation but commitment by our students who have committed themselves to reaching their goals.”
During the presentation, eighth graders were given ‘special’ recognition for their outstanding leadership and the example they set, both of which, said Fischer, have led to the completion of yet another successful Middle School year.
John Doyle, Middle and Upper School drama teacher, served as Master of Ceremonies during the ninety-minute assembly held in RSPA Panther Hall. Audrey Nelson, who was among countless faculty presenting awards, praised students who participated in the annual St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Math-A-Thon for raising a record
breaking $8,230. For more than 30 years, Math-A-Thon has successfully helped students improve their math skills while helping to raise millions of dollars in the fight against childhood cancer and life-threatening diseases.
In his closing address, Fischer proudly introduced thirty students who have achieved honor roll distinction for three consecutive years in the Middle School. He also implored 6th and 7th grade students, in particular, to “take note” of their fellow students who have been recognized at this year’s assembly and urged those to take advantage of the many activities that are available in the Middle School.
