While many middle school students are basking in the sun this summer, others like Ranney’s Sophia Jackman are reliving their own experiences as middle schoolers on the stage in an original rock musical entitled “Life in the Middle” that recently completed its run at Two River Theater in Red Bank.
Jackman, a seventh grader, was one of 22 local area students and musicians who recently participated in the play that was co-authored and directed by KJ Sanchez who recently departed her post as TRT’s associate artistic director to develop her own theatrical company.
The play, which ran from June 24-27, depicted the trials and tribulations of the middle school experience and “looks at what it’s really like to be in the middle,” according to the play’s dialogue.
Rather than work with professional actors, Sanchez chose to work with actual middle schoolers and put out a casting call to schools throughout Monmouth County. Jackman was selected among the 55 students who auditioned for the play.
