On Sunday, September 19, 2010, several players from the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team headed to Neptune, New Jersey to participate in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s first annual 5K Run/Walk and Community Day.
Accompanied by Coach Ian McNamara, seniors Alexis Wyckoff, Adrianne Wyckoff and Sydney Shapiro, and sophomore Ashleigh Shay, were among the 229 people to run or walk in an effort to raise funds for the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital.
While enjoying sunny skies and 70 degree weather, each of the girls managed to finish within the top 10 runners in her age group. Out of all 15 to 19-year-old females participating in the event, Adrianne took 3rd, with a total time of 28:59. Her sister, Alexis, was a second behind, finishing 4th in 29 minutes flat. They were then followed by Sydney and Ashleigh, who placed 5th and 6th for their age group.
To top off the morning, the girls had the opportunity to meet Christie Rampone, captain of the United States Women’s National Soccer team and participant in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympic games.
Overall, it was a weekend to be remembered, both by participants, and by those benefiting from the charity event.
