Ranney School’s Middle and Upper School Science teachers, Mike Dunn and Laurie Rozzo, hosted a star gazing event near Ranney’s campus-based observatory on Thursday, November 11, 2010.
On the cool, yet cloudless November night, 25 6th grade and Upper School students joined their parents and siblings for an evening under the stars. Star gazers were also joined by several members of the S*T*A*R* group, or Society of Telescopy, Astronomy and Radio. Under direction of the Ranney School Science Department, the event featured nine telescopes focused on several amazing sights. While enjoying hot cocoa and cookies, students and their families were able to view Jupiter’s cloud bands and moons, Casio Pia, a Ring Nebula, Persius, deep craters on the moon and the international space station during its orbit around the Earth.
Students at Ranney develop scientific thinking and processing skills through a wide variety of hands-on experiences and activities relating to the real-world environment. The observatory serves as a vital part to Ranney’s Science Program and its mission, allowing students who “are very interested in astronomy to greatly benefit from the experience,” said 6th grade Earth Science teacher, Laurie Rozzo.
Overall, the experience not only served as an evening in which families could bond, but it also allowed students to develop a greater understanding of the field of Astronomy.
