4th Grader Jacob Field Wins Art Recognition Online

Using a variety of media, Ranney’s Elementary level Art Program introduces basic principles of artistic expression: shape, line, balance, design, contrast and the color spectrum. To highlight the artistic talents of its students, Beginners through grade 12, Ranney School’s Art Department submits student-produced artwork to an international online museum found at www.artsonia.com. This innovative website provides Ranney School with the opportunity to “archive all of [its] work” and, allows “students to build a portfolio that spans all their years as a Ranney School student,” said Graphic Arts teacher, Barbara Levine.

The website organizes art portfolios by student identification number or school name. Each week, Artsonia chooses various pieces of artwork that it deems most impressive, and allows visitors from around the globe to vote for, in their opinion, the best one from the bunch. On the week of November 21, 2010, Ranney’s own 4th grade student, Jacob Field, or Jacob9857, was selected to be Artsonia’s 4th to 6th grade “Artist of the Week.” While competing with students from other schools around the world, Jacob earned 3,622 votes, the largest number of votes from visitors to the 4th through 6th grade gallery. In recognizing Jacob for this artistic accomplishment, www.artsonia.com will present Jacob with a plaque and $50 gift card to Blick Art Materials.

Ranney School is proud of Jacob and each and every one of its exceptional students for their unique abilities, whether in athletics, academics, art or music. Now in its second year of participation with Artsonia, Ranney School uses the website to showcase the artistic talents of its fine student body. The website offers an online store that allows parents to purchase mugs, tote bags, holiday cards and more, depicting their child’s artwork. A portion of the proceeds for these items also goes toward funding education at Ranney School.

The Art Department encourages any parent, grandparent or friend to register at www.artsonia.com, and experience an inspiring and innovative piece of technology. “Families and friends finally have a way to share in the creativity of our art students and can help build their confidence and pride,” said Mrs. Levine.
