Varsity Fencing Team Takes Gold

Epee Squad Named 2011 State Champions

Following a first place finish at the January 29th NJSIAA/ Bollinger District Championships hosted by North Hunterdon High School, the Ranney School epee squad competed with other squads from across the state in the NJSIAA/ Bollinger Squad Championships on Sunday, February 27, 2011. An independent college preparatory day school located in historic Tinton Falls, New Jersey, Ranney’s fencing team embellished on a longstanding tradition of excellence when it took the title of 2011 State Epee Champions.

One of the most prominent high school fencing events held throughout the United States, the NJSIAA/ Bollinger District Championships began on Saturday, January 29, as eight of Ranney’s most versatile fencing members traveled to the very competitive District #2 Championships and qualifiers in Annandale, New Jersey. Matched up against teams like Voorhees, Montgomery and West Windsor, the Panthers’ talented epee squad comprised of Omar Sarhan ’12 (Ocean), Sam Tkach ’12 (Little Silver) and Thomas Florek ’11 (Colts Neck) earned a gold medal.

This fine finish marked Ranney’s first-ever District Championship win and Squad State Championship qualifier. Little did the boys’ team know, however, that greater things were yet to come. “One of the most outstanding achievements seen in my 23 years as Director of Athletics,” said Thomas Moriau, “is Ranney’s epee squad being named 2011 State Epee Champions.”

Competing against public, independent and parochial schools within the NJSIAA, Sam Tkach led the way for Ranney at the Squad State Championships, with a 12-3 record on the B-strip. Coached by Atlantic Fencing Club Manager Agota Balot, Ranney’s Varsity fencing team defeated the Cetrulo Tournament weapon title holder, Millburn High School, 32-30.

Battling 10 other schools during the NJSIAA/ Bollinger District Championships in January, Ranney’s foil squad also qualified to compete in yesterday’s championship match. A squad consisting of Victor Gainor ’12 (Spring Lake), Jake Bassinder ’13 (Point Pleasant) and Thomas Hearne ’12 (Holmdel), the boys edged past the Don Bosco Preparatory High School of Ramsey for an 11th place finish.

Still moving forward through a very successful 2010-11 winter season, 2011 State Epee Champion fencers Sam Tkach and Omar Sarhan will represent Ranney at the NJSIAA Individual Championships on Saturday, March 12, 2011. The Star-Ledger nominated Sarhan as its “High School Top Performer of the Week” on Thursday, February 24, 2011. To view his spotlight article, please click here.

Fencing Team Dominates at Prep States

Up against seven competing schools throughout the state, Ranney’s varsity boys’ fencing team headed to Princeton Day School for a Prep State Tournament on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Bearing a very talented squad, the Panthers pulled through with an overall third place team finish, after also taking first and third in epee and foil.

Ranney’s epee squad defeated all seven opponents encountered throughout the match to take gold. In addition, each member of the team earned an individual place. While fencer Sam Tkach ’12 (Little Silver) took second in the event, teammates Omar Sarhan ’12 (Ocean) and Thomas Florek ’11 (Colts Neck) garnered third and fourth, respectively.

Off to a challenging start upon meeting two of the strongest teams participating in the tournament, Ranney’s foil squad eventually found its rhythm and obtained 12 wins to finish third. From the foil squad, junior Thomas Hearne of Holmdel earned an individual bronze finish — only three scored touches behind second place. Although the team’s saber squad did not have enough fencers to compete at a team level and finished seventh for the day, saber fencer Patrick Glodkowski ’12 of Parlin managed to reach the individual finals as well, where he took fourth.
