Instrumental Concert Showcases New & Returning Performers

Friends, family, faculty and fellow Performing Arts patrons packed the Commons Black Box Theater on Tuesday, March 1, for an All-Division Instrumental Concert. While for some, the night signified their first-ever onstage performance before a live audience, for others it showcased their many talents and musical accomplishments.

The evening began with a performance by the Elementary Intermediate String Orchestra, led by Dr. Dorothy Sobieski and accompanied by Tri-M ® Music Honor Society member Christa Dalmazio ’12. They were followed by the Elementary Advanced String Orchestra, which graced the audience with performances that included a cheerful rendition of “Heart and Soul,” accompanied by Jr. Tri-M ® Music Honor Society member Erik Bovino ’15 on piano. Erik also joined the Middle School Orchestra as it performed a crowd-pleasing rendition of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” among other songs.

The first act concluded with a performance of Mozart’s “String Quartet in C Major” by Ranney’s Chamber Players, comprised of Sabrina Park ’15 and Nelson Chan ’16 on violin, Christa Dalmazio on viola, and Elizabeth Martin ’14 on cello. While Sabrina was nominated 1st Violin in the Central Jersey Regional Intermediate Orchestra, Christa was named soprano in the All-State Women’s Chorus and recently qualified for round one of Classical Singer Magazine’s “High School Vocal Competition.” She will participate in the competition’s second round in Los Angeles this May.

Following a brief intermission, conductor Kevin Cotter led first-time performers from the Fourth Grade Band as they confidently took to the stage for “Merrily We Roll Along,” and “Hot Cross Buns.” Amidst applause from an encouraging audience, the Fifth Grade Band then played a two-set song selection that included “Frere Jacques” and “When the Saints go Marching in.” The Middle School Concert Band took to the stage next and ended its set with a very peppy “African Marching Song” that had several younger members of the audience up and dancing. Amongst fellow band members was eighth grader Anna Xia. Anna serves as 2nd Chair Flute in both the All-Shore Intermediate Band and CJMEA Region 2 Intermediate Band.

A great end to the night’s All-Division Instrumental Concert, Ranney’s Upper School Jazz Ensemble blew listeners away with some blues and modern-day songs that included, “You Raise Me Up” and “The Call” — featuring trumpet soloist and Tri-M ® Music Honor Society member Jonathan Rosenthal ’12.

The concert was also an excellent opportunity for Ranney’s younger performers to admire and, someday, emulate the strengths and accomplishments of older Ranney School musicians. “It is important and inspiring for our young musicians to see and hear older students play,” said Performing Arts Chair Tess Nielsen.

As the Performing Arts Department at Ranney continues to flourish, the school will offer extended music and art programs as part of its new “Ranney Plus” program. Beginning in the fall of 2011, “Ranney Plus” will offer students an afterschool program from 3:45 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. A new late bus service will be available. Additionally, Summer Programs at Ranney School offers students from the Ranney community and beyond a chance to broaden their musical talents through two-week intensive music workshops led by Dr. Sobieski.
