MS Science Dept. Hosts First Annual Virtual Science Fair
The Science Department hosted its first annual Ranney sixth grade Virtual Science Fair on Tuesday morning, March 15 and Wednesday March 23, with students using technology to showcase various science projects ranging from physics and anatomy to biology and more.
Hosted by Middle School earth science teacher Laurie Rozzo, the fair consisted of presentations from 14 groups comprised of 26 total sixth grade students. While one group with members Dylan Biswal, Michael DePalma and Robert Stott used both charts and videos to display its experiment on magnetic fields, another group that included Pooja Nayyar and Alexa Biswal also used a PowerPoint presentation to explain how often birds choose to eat various foods such as eggs, fruits and greens.
Following every presentation, groups then answered three questions each from members of the audience, which included classmates, teachers and parents. For instance, after Ashley Biswal’s and Rachel Macnow’s video surveying whether the nerves in one’s feet or hands are more sensitive, one student followed-up with the question, “Do you think your final reading would have been different if your subjects used their left hands and feet instead of their right?”
Another group of health-conscious aspiring doctors — Olivia Nisbet, Brittany Hofferber and Jillian Ross — conducted a very interesting experiment on the decomposition of French Fries. Although their original hypothesis was inaccurate, the group did learn that McDonald’s French Fries decompose quickest over a two-week time period, and are therefore less fatty compared to Burger King and Bobby’s Burger Palace.
All Ranney projects, along with projects from seven other local schools including Dore Academy, Pine Point School and The Walker School, were entered into the National Association of Independent Schools’
(NAIS) Virtual Science Fair, in hopes of becoming an
NAIS-VSF Champion.
Thank you to all e-mentors for their dedication to Ranney School and its students! Each team was given one e-mentor to communicate with and ask questions. E-mentors range from teachers and professors to other people in the field of science, and are provided through the NAIS.
Middle School Science Olympiad Travels to New Jersey State Tournament
The Middle School Science Olympiad Team headed to Middlesex County College in Edison on Tuesday, March 15, for the 19th annual New Jersey State Tournament presented by the NJ Science Teachers Association and NJ Science Education Leadership Association. Up against approximately 26 Middle Schools from across the state, two Ranney teams in particular — Benjamin Metzger ’15 with Ryan Eaddy ’15, and Audrey Effenberger ’15 with David Paasche ’15, displayed outstanding performances.
Benjamin and Ryan took third in the tournament’s “Junkyard Challenge,” an event in which students were asked to partially pre-construct a device and complete final construction and adaptation onsite. Meanwhile, Audrey and David placed fifth for Ranney in the tournament’s “Ecology” event. During “Ecology,” students answered questions involving content knowledge and process skills while examining different ecosystems. “The students enjoyed the challenge and displayed great teamwork and cooperation while having fun,” said Science Olympiad advisor and physical science teacher Elizabeth Williams.
Ms. Williams and co-advisor Christopher Meharg would like to thank accompanying parent-chaperones for their help in making the day run smoothly. “This is a great experience for all our young scientists and it would not be possible without continued support from our parents,” said Ms. Williams.
