At Ranney, every child is known and valued. This past semester, many athletes and students from various grade levels have soared to new and outstanding heights. While we recognize the hard work and talent of all students at Ranney, a number have recently shared their notable highlights with us, and we congratulate them on these achievements:
JAKE BASSINDER (Point Pleasant)
Jake Bassinder ’13 earned a gold medal after participating in a NAC Division III Men’s Foil Fencing Tournament in Detroit, Michigan this past March. Jake quickly moved up in ranking as he swept past 119 fencers from the United States, France, Canada and Puerto Rico. Competing against a pool of six fencers from Michigan, Kansas, New York and Pennsylvania in round one of the tournament, Jake won all of his bouts to advance to a Direct Elimination round. Once again, Jake arose victorious and won his final bout of the day 8-6 against Yueh-Lin W Tsai of Utah.
JARED KATZ (Holmdel)
Although not an in-school athlete, Jared Katz ’16 spends his time, September through April, playing ice hockey for the Red Bank Generals. Currently the number one team in New Jersey’s Peewee AA division with 51 wins, four losses and four ties, Jared and his team also rank number seven in the nation among 479 youth hockey teams!
After winning the Mid-Atlantic SilverSticks Tournament, the boys traveled to Port Huron, Michigan to compete in the International SilverSticks Tournament. While there, Jared’s team placed third against teams like the Tampa Scorpions from Florida and Mississaugua Terriers from Canada.
A fine team, the Red Bank Generals also took gold in Lake Placid during a 2011 CAN/AM Tournament, as well as won the Tri-State hockey Playoffs. Acting as center for the Generals, Jared began his ice hockey career three years ago, having played roller hockey since age seven. When asked what he likes most about ice hockey, Jared replied, “I like scoring goals and going places.”
Jared and the Generals traveled to compete in a National Tournament in California from March 30th until April 3rd. While up against some very talented competition, the boys managed to take second amongst 34 competing U.S. teams.
ZACHARY DIGIARO (Middletown) & CHRISTOPHER CENTRELLA (Brielle)
Both Zachary DiGiaro ’16 and Christopher Centrella ’16 are among the fastest swimmers in the state of New Jersey. Zach (Fly and Freestyle) and Chris (Breaststroke) qualified to compete in an elite regional swimming event called Zones in Rochester, New York on March 30th, 31st and April 1st. Only the top three swimmers in each state qualifiy for this team, which competes against future Olympians from the summer 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.
JONATHAN ROSENTHAL (Colts Neck)

Jonathan Rosenthal '12 on his acceptance into the
New Jersey Governor's School in the Sciences at Drew University. A "Ranney Lifer," student-leader and scholar-student,
Jonathan is President to the Class of 2012, Treasurer of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, a member to the cross country and track team, French National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Mathematics Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Math League, NJ Science League and Science Research Club.
Jonathan, along with other outstanding high school juniors from across the state, will participate in the New Jersey Governor's School in the Sciences program from July 10 until the 30th.
HANNAH SIMPSON (Lincroft) & MEGAN SHEROW (Clarksburg)
The Ranney Thespian Troupe #630 received four Basie Nominations, to be presented at the Count Basie Theater on Wednesday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. While students
Hannah Simpson '12 and
Megan Sherow '13 both earned the title "Best Lead Actress in a Drama" during their performances as Helena and Bottom in
A Midsummer Night's Dream, Ranney School Fine and Performing Arts teacher Kevin Cotter also garnered two Basie Nominations. They were for: "Best Lighting in a Drama" in
A Midsummer Night's Dream and "Best Lighting in a Musical" during
Little Women.
TESSA PAYER (Wall) & CARMINE MASTROKOSTAS (Freehold)
Tessa Payer ’16 and Carmine Mastrokostas ’18 auditioned for the New York City based iTheatrics 2011 Summer Theatre Academy, and were accepted! The two auditioned with approximately 300 musical theatre students from around the country on Saturday, March 12, 2011. This year, the 2011 Summer Theatre Academy will rework classic Broadway Jr. titles, along with new adaptations created in partnership with Music Theater International. A perfect opportunity for many young performers, the two will work with an impressive array of musical theatre educators, directors, coaches and choreographers — all with extensive “Broadway” experience.
SABRINA PARK (Colts Neck)
Beginning Saturday, March 19, 2011, eighth grader Sabrina Park became the first Ranney string student accepted into the All-State Intermediate Orchestra! She was one of 48 Middle School students chosen to play in the orchestra. Sabrina, along with 70 musicians from across New Jersey, was required to play major scales, perform a solo, and complete a sight reading piece during auditions.
JACK FINK (Middletown) , SOPHIA JACKMAN (Freehold) & CHLOE TRIOLO (Colts Neck)
Every spring, the Two River Theater Company auditions talented Middle Schoolers from across the state to participate in an eight-week play making process. Jack Fink '16, Sophia Jackman '16 and Chloe Triolo '15, along with over 50 other students, auditioned for a play entitled Young Voices 732. All were given a part in the musical, which explores the answers to such questions as, "what's on your minds, what's important to you, and what keeps you up at night?"
CHRISTA DALMAZIO (Leonardo)
Christa Dalmazio '12 was accepted to the 2012 NJMEA All-State Mixed Chorus. One of 47 finalists in the All-State ensemble, Christa ranks fourth amongst 166 high school sopranos. Her second year an All-State participant, she will sing at NJPAC in November 2011.
TOR MILLER (Colts Neck) , MICHAEL MORRONGIELLO (Little Silver) & JOSEPH DISALVO (Colts Neck)
The Tor Miller Band, led by Tor Miller '12, Mike Morrongiello '11 and Joe DiSalvo '11, received runner-up in "The Break" contest, and will perform at the Bamboozle Musical Festival on April 29, 2011. This is the Tor Miller Band's second year playing at Bamboozle.
LINDSEY MAHER (Colts Neck)
Lindsey Maher ’19 is a wonderful student and strong writer. Shortly after submitting her personal narrative entitled “Breathe” to Creative Communication, Lindsey discovered that her piece would be published in an upcoming book called Celebrating What is Important to Me.
