Students Showcase Talents on Panther Hall Stage

Ranney Hosts First-Ever Evening of Music & Monologues
The International Thespian Troupe showcased Middle and Upper School Performing Arts as it hosted an evening of Music and Monologues in RSPA Panther Hall on Friday, April 29, 2011.

Sponsored by the Tri-M ® Music Honor Society, students grades six through 12 took to the stage for Ranney’s first-ever Music and Monologues Cavalcade — a variety show with talents ranging from classical violinists playing Vivaldi’s Summer to practiced guitarists performing Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind. Throughout the evening, performers also graced the audience with voice selections from such music genres as opera and Broadway show tunes.

Forensics pieces also accompanied the night’s entertainment as students read through excerpts by Shakespeare and monologues from contemporary films. This first-time event truly showcased the amazing talents of Ranney’s Middle and Upper School students, and the community thanks Forensics Director Nancy Wade, Technical Theater Supervisor John Doyle, and Accompanist Tess Nielsen for their hard work and dedication, which added to the evening’s success.

Students Practice Public Speaking at Forensics Dinner and Showcase Event
Ranney School students, parents and faculty members attended a Forensics Dinner and Showcase on May 3, 2011 in RSPA Panther Hall, complete with performances from members of the Middle School Forensics team and Storytellers Club.

Throughout the evening, 26 students took to the stage as they graced the audience with three to seven minute skits portraying drama, historic folktales and humor. A total of 19 presentations included a drama entitled “To Bee or Not to Bee” by Susan Kim, which depicted a bumble bee fighting for the right to board Noah’s Ark, the mythical tale of “Narcissus & Echo” as retold by Anthony Horowitz who highlights a love gone tragic due to infatuation, and a humorous account known as “Schoolhouse Rock,” by Jason D. Martin, depicting lessons taught to first graders by a teacher obsessed with government conspiracy.

Students in both the Storytellers Club and on the Forensics Team have many opportunities to master their public speaking skills year-round. Aside from performing at assemblies, competitions and Open Houses throughout the year, they also receive help and training from faculty advisors and coaches John Doyle, Allison Reddington, Cheryl Fricchione and Amelia Caverly. Thanks to help and support of these coaches, advisor and Middle School Dean of Students and Faculty Development Nancy Wade, and parents, 38 students on the Forensics Team received either Honorable Mention or other awards at competitions in the fall and spring of this school year alone (that’s more than half of the entire team)!
