LS Launches Golf & Field Hockey Clinics Afterschool

The after school activities program kicked-off Lower School golf and field hockey clinics this week.

Now in its second year, the Lower School golf program has expanded to meet the needs of Ranney's youngest athletes. Beginning May 2, 2011, 83 students in grades Kindergarten through five will receive five weeks of instruction and encouragement from afterschool advisers Katie Hunt and Sean Lang, and coaches from TGA Golf Adventures. A provider of National Golf Enrichment Programs, TGA is one of the fastest growing junior golf organizations in the country, promoting growth and interest in junior golf across America.

Each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, approximately 20 students will take to the front lawn or gym for hour-long sessions that focus on basic fundamentals of the game, swing dynamic, rules, etiquette, and course management. The group also plans to visit a local golf course.

New this spring, the afterschool program also launched its first-ever Lower School field hockey clinic. Starting May 5, 2011, the program will offer four weeks of basic instruction to fourth and fifth grade girls eager to learn the game of field hockey every Monday and Thursday.

An opportunity to prepare students for the Middle School athletic program, field hockey sessions will offer personalized one-on-one indoor and outdoor training from Ranney’s varsity field hockey coach Eileen McEnery. Equipped with nine years experience teaching Ranney field hockey at the varsity level, Coach McEnery will educate the girls on a proper stick grip, how to dribble, how to receive the ball, different passing options, player space, jabs, stops and rules of the game.

While with each passing year Lower School student-interest in unique sports like fencing, golf, field hockey and lacrosse continues to grow, so too does the level of talent seen in these scholar-athletes as they make their transition to the Middle School. “It is my belief that the early athletic experiences our Lower School children receive afterschool will, without a doubt, positively affect the future success of our Middle and Upper School athletic programs in the years to come,” said Director of Athletics Thomas Moriau.
