MS Inducts Members into Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society®
There are many traditions that hold significant meaning in the lives of Middle School students at Ranney. The 7th Annual Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society® Induction Ceremony held Tuesday, May 17, 2011 is one such tradition.
The only honor society at Ranney to induct members from the Middle School class, Jr. Tri-M® recognizes those students who possess qualities of leadership, service and most importantly, musicianship. Following the induction of 27 new student members into Jr. Tri-M® in RSPA Panther Hall, Middle School Strings teacher Dr. Dorothy Sobieski called continuing members Ruchi Raval ’16 and Sana Zaidi ’16 — with two years of service — to the podium to speak on behalf of the other 18 continuing members invited to join the society this spring. While each spoke of community service opportunities with Jr. Tri-M®, Ruchi admitted that she most enjoyed shopping at Toys ‘R’ Us for “Toys for Tots” last December, and Sana recounted her experience visiting McAuley Hall Health Care Center in January, 2011. Both expressed excitement about making an even greater difference in the community next school year.
Junior Tri-M® Chapter Advisor Lilly Torrente inducted eight continuing members — with three years of service — into the organization. Ms. Torrente described each of these inductees as individuals who possess leadership, demonstrate a commitment to their ensembles and serve as true examples of what it means to be a music master. Jr. Tri-M® Vice President George Timmins ’15 and Historian Coleen Ross ’15 spoke on behalf of all continuing members with three years of service. While George held Jr. Tri-M® responsible for some of his greatest Middle School memories, Coleen credited the organization for helping her recognize her love of music.
After reciting a Jr. Tri-M® pledge of service, several members then received awards for leadership, service and musicianship. Presented by Ms. Torrente, Chapter President Chloe Triolo ’15 received a leadership award for devoting three years of service to the society, setting and meeting realistic goals for the chapter, and participating in major service projects throughout her tenure. Three recipients of the service award, which was presented by Dr. Sobieski, were Sana Zaidi, Ruchi Raval and Sophia Jackman ’16. The girls were recognized for their exceptional commitment to working with and on the behalf of others. Finally, for only the second time in seven years, Music and Band teacher Kevin Cotter offered the musicianship award to eighth grader Erik Bovino, who continuously excels in music and spreads knowledge of music theory amongst his peers.
With that, the Middle School Concert Band — under direction of conductor Kevin Cotter — performed three songs, which included “Simple Gifts,” the “African Marching Song” and a “Russian Sailor’s Dance.” The assembly ended with closing remarks from Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff, who commented on how much Jr. Tri-M®, along with the Performing Arts Department, has evolved under the guidance of Department Chair Tess Nielsen and an exceptional faculty including Lily Torrente, Kevin Cotter, Dorothy Sobieski and John Doyle. Dr. Sykoff concluded by saying, “As part of an honor society, students share a common bond and acquire vital skills that will last a lifetime.”
Congratulations to all inductees:

Sounds of Spring- A Middle & Upper School Concert
Following a Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society® Induction Ceremony on Tuesday morning, the Ranney community experienced its second dose of music for the day at a Middle & Upper School Spring Concert in RSPA Panther Hall on May 17, 2011.
A great ending to this school year, the evening’s Middle & Upper School Spring Concert featured Ranney’s newest class of Jr. Tri-M® inductees, and celebrated many final formal performances from senior musicians like Lauren Resnikoff, Lauren Waters, Joe DiSalvo and Mike Morrongiello on the Roberts stage. Middle School ensembles spotlighted throughout the event included Band, Chorus and Orchestra who saw the show as an opportunity to prepare for an upcoming Music in the Parks competition. Meanwhile, the Upper School featured select ensembles like the Women’s Chorus, Chamber Players and Jazz Band. In addition, The Tor Miller Band, featuring alumnus Ian Bamberger ’10, also graced the stage.
Some of the evening’s best moments included a rendition of “Blue Bossa” by saxophonist Val Kharkover ’12 with the Jazz Trio, a soulful cover version of Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love” accompanied by Tor Miller ’12 on piano and Noah Goldstein ’14 and Sabrina Palazzolo ’14 on guitar, and “Danza Latina,” with a violin solo from Sabrina Park ’15.
The Tor Miller Band, which played an original composition known as “Stand By,” was then followed by the Upper School Jazz ensemble that, with a little help from Middle School performers Nikhil Lakhani ’16 and David Buckman ’15 in the saxophone section, finished up the show.
Overall, it was an exciting night of music and a great way to complete a vibrant year in performing arts. To view a complete list of all performers throughout the evening, please click
