2011 Convocation Honors Scholarship in Seniors

The Ranney community paid tribute to outstanding members from the Class of 2011 at an Honors Convocation on Wednesday, May 18. A celebration of the academic accomplishments seen in Ranney’s graduating class, the annual ceremony served as the first of many events leading to the school’s June 17th Commencement Ceremony.

Held in RSPA Panther Hall, this year’s exceptional seniors received awards from Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff, Head of the Upper School Paul Zanowski, and other Upper School faculty and administration members. Of the 56 graduating seniors, 14 were honored in areas of history, art history, economics, English, science, computer science, mathematics, French, Spanish, music, theatre and the visual arts as they demonstrated academic excellence and leadership, and contributed to over 4,800 hours of community service this school year.

Special awards presented during the ceremony ranged from the following: Distinguished Humanities Scholar Award, National Merit Scholarship, Ram Sheila Bharara Communications Award, AP Scholar Awards, President’s Awards for Educational Excellence, Scholar-Athlete Awards, Ranney School Parents’ Association (RSPA) Award, and Excellence in Citizenship Awards.

Stephen Triano ’11
of Lincroft learned in September 2010 that he qualified as a Semifinalist in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high school entered the 2011 National Merit® Scholarship Program by taking a 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). On February 1, 2011, Stephen discovered that he was one of 15,000 other students throughout the nation selected to be a program Finalist. To be selected as a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout his/her high school career, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on a qualifying test. After meeting all of these qualifications, Stephen was finally declared a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship® winner, and will receive $1,000 per year from the University of Chicago beginning this fall.

In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Sykoff — a man whose optimism and faith in what children can become motivates, inspires, and guides our community in its mission to know and value every child — acknowledged that every senior being recognized at the Honors Convocation has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to scholarship. With 239 college acceptances, 19 AP Scholars, 48 Science Expo Projects and 216 AP studio works submitted by the Class of 2011 this school year, Dr. Sykoff praised the graduates for their undying “passion for learning and creating.”

A special commendation was also presented to one student – Grace Farren of Manasquan. Grace, a Prudential Spirit of Community Service Award winner, was recognized for outstanding acts of community service. Grace obtained this prestigious award after raising more than $17,000 to benefit the Hazlet-based “180 Turning Lives Around” shelter for abused women last year. The founder of “Grace’s Gift,” a charity existing solely to benefit the nonprofit organization serving victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence throughout Monmouth County, Grace first designed and sold T-shirts with the saying: “I am loved, I am respected, I have a purpose, I am strong.” Grace later organized and hosted a benefit concert at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park on October 17, 2010, with more than 250 people in attendance. Grace also qualified for Prudential’s President’s Volunteer Service Award, recognizing Americans of all ages who volunteer significant time to serving their communities and the country.

In his closing remarks, Director of Academic Affairs Robert Bowman, Ph.D. told those in attendance, “be it flair for the dramatic, athletic endurance, service leadership, musicality, brainpower, or artistic expression, we are truly a blessed community.” He encouraged seniors to make connections with professors, coaches, mentors and peers, adding, “make sure to spend some final moments with all those important people in your high school life and let them know how you feel.”
