Lacrosse Wall to Help Athletes

Ranney’s lacrosse teams can now perfect their stick work while conditioning on a new lacrosse wall positioned near the school’s Guidone Track and Karagianakis Field.

A generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gerhard (parents of Madison ’18 and Peter Gerhard, Jr. ’15), Ranney School began construction of the wall earlier this spring. Painted Panther blue with white squares, and adorned with the words “Home of the Panthers,” “practicing on the wall four to five times per week is sure to take Ranney’s lacrosse program to a new level,” said head varsity lacrosse coach Joseph Tweed.

Similar to a driving range, lacrosse players can use the wall to fine-tune their game through basic drills like a one-hand catch and cradle, quick stick, and behind the back throw. According to head Middle School lacrosse coach Daniel Moller, athleticism and knowledge of the game can be worked on anywhere, but without a partner to throw with, it’s difficult to work on other fundamentals of the game. Alleviating the need to practice with a fellow teammate, scholar-athletes can now work on stick skills, ball handling and accuracy by aiming at a square while standing five to seven yards away from the wall. “As a lacrosse player, this is one tool that I could not have lived without,” said Coach Moller.

Conditioning on the wall will also increase strength in an athlete’s wrists, forearms, core muscles, shoulders and legs. The Ranney community can expect to see vast improvement throughout Ranney’s lacrosse program as scholar-athletes continue to use the wall to their own as well as their teams’ advantage.
