The Middle School Band, Chorus and Orchestra enjoyed much success during a Music in the Parks Festival held in Pennsylvania on Friday, May 20, 2011 as each earned impressive ratings from esteemed judges throughout the Tri-State area.

Competing amongst some 20 participating Middle Schools and High Schools ranging as far as Delaware and New York City, approximately 66 Ranney students gave their all during graded musical performances at Kutztown University and Kutztown High School.

Despite challenging weather, the group afterwards proceeded to Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Accompanied by several parent chaperones, Head of the Middle School David Fischer, and esteemed faculty from the school’s Performing Arts Department, all enjoyed a day of fun and rides, and attended a Music in the Parks Awards Ceremony later that evening. The results were as follows:

Middle School Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Lilly Torrente
– Excellent Rating, 1st Place
Middle School Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Dorothy Sobieski – Excellent Rating, 2nd Place
Middle School Band, under the direction of Mr. Kevin Cotter – Good Rating, 4th Place

Overall, the trip to Pennsylvania proved a great experience for all in attendance, and students are already discussing next year’s event! Please join the Music Department in congratulating Mr. Cotter, Mrs. Torrente, Dr. Sobieski and the following Middle School Band, Chorus and Orchestra members for this outstanding accomplishment:

Additionally, Ranney’s Jr. Tri-M® Music Honor Society, Chapter 4410, was named Second-Runner Up in a national Tri-M® Chapter of the Year Contest, sponsored by the National Association of Music Education (MENC) this May, 2011. As a result, the school will receive $400 and has the option of either using the money to fund a serious enrichment project for the chapter, or grant scholarships to Middle School students exemplifying exceptional academic, musical, service and leadership contributions.

Named a First-Runner Up in 2010, Ranney chose to grant three scholarships of $200 each to Middle School students wishing to continue their music studies last summer. They were Chloe Triolo ’15, George Timmins ’15, and Mohnish Rachuru ’15. While Chloe used the money to purchase a new guitar and Mohnish used the funds to advance his drumming skills, George took private voice lessons and performed with a student choral-group in Carnegie Hall.

Under guidance of Jr. Tri-M® advisor Lillianne Torrente and Performing Arts Chair Tess Nielsen, Chapter 4410 has won National Chapter of the Year (2009), has twice been awarded First-Runner Up (2008, 2010) and has now also earned Second Runner-Up (2011). Service contributions made by Chapter 4410 this academic year included a “Shopping for Charity” Toys for Tots Campaign, a performance at McAuley Hall Health Care Center and a student-led Music in Our Schools Week.
