The Ranney School Parents’ Association gathered in RSPA Panther Hall for its second general meeting of the 2010-2011 school year on Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Not only did the meeting recognize efforts from the RSPA’s event chair people, but it also opened the floor to nominations for positions on the Association’s Executive Board.
In her welcoming speech, RSPA president Sue Grosso thanked all parent-volunteers for taking time out of their busy schedules to work with the Parents’ Association — particularly over the past two years. “Each and every one of you has made a difference, by your dedication and tireless efforts, to all the RSPA initiatives and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” said Mrs. Grosso. Now concluding her second year as RSPA president, Mrs. Grosso will hand-off leadership of the RSPA to Mimi Keenan, who will serve her term as president of the organization for the next two years. “I ‘pass the gavel’ to Mimi with the highest level of confidence,” said Mrs. Grosso. “I know she will be an excellent leader.”
Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff commented on Mrs. Grosso’s leadership as well as the continued evolution of Ranney in noting, “We’ve been fortunate to have such a visionary leader like Sue Grosso leading the Parents’ Association through a watershed era.” He concluded by saying, “We know that Mimi Keenan will continue to carry the torch of success for the RSPA in the future, and I look forward to working with her in the years to come.”
During breakfast, members on the RSPA Executive Board not only recognized chairs of events and activities throughout the school year, but also honored Director of Early Childhood Development, Laura Gillroy, who will retire this spring after 23 years of service to Ranney and its mission. In addition, the morning showed appreciation for six members of the Executive Board who will retire from their posts at the conclusion of the school year. They include: Nancy Roberts (six years on the Executive Board), Nancy Young (five years), Tom Martin (four years), Barbara Brand (three years), Arzu Chu (two years) and immediate past president Michele Karagianakis, who will conclude a two-year term as Board advisor.
The Parents’ Association then held open elections for these six positions on the Executive Board. To qualify for nomination, parents must have attended both general meetings during the school year and held at least two leadership positions on the Parents’ Association’s slate of activities. Allana Egol — current RSPA Secretary — was elected for a full term, after being appointed to the post in the fall of 2010. Also elected to the Board for the first time ever were Ursula Ayers, who served as co-chair on the 2011 Panther Ball Committee and previously chaired the Fall Festival, Tom Gavin, who has chaired multiple sports within the Panther Cubs’ sports program, and Tina Pflaster, who has led the Fashion Show Committee over the past two years.
