Accompanied by friends and family, Ranney celebrated the musical talents of its Upper and Lower School students through a “Jamfest Social” and Lower School Gathering on May 26th and 27th.
Accompanied by friends and family, Ranney celebrated the musical talents of its Upper and Lower School students through a “Jamfest Social” and Lower School Gathering on May 26th and 27th.

With sno-kone and cotton candy in hand, Ranney’s older students rocked out under the warm sun during a Student Council-sponsored “Jamfest” on Thursday. Positioned near the Upper and Middle School Cafeteria, audience members gathered around a stage to hear 11 musical and vocal performances from student bands and Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff. When not cheering for their fellow peers, the Upper School listened to a DJ as it enjoyed inflatable obstacle courses, basketball, volleyball, softball, Frisbee, football and chatting with friends beneath the trees.

A temporary escape from intense heat, Ranney’s Lower School held an indoor Gathering in RSPA Panther Hall on Friday. To sum up an exciting fourth quarter, complete with the Lower School play Captain Louie, Jr., a Science Fair and Colors of the World Day, members of the Lower School used the morning’s performances to demonstrate outcomes of goals set earlier in the school year. With family and friends in attendance, the assembly began with three performances from the Lower School Band led by conductor Kevin Cotter.

They were followed by the fifth grade band, which played three pieces that included the epic “Star Wars” theme song. From the Lower School Chorus comprised of fourth and fifth grade students, the audience also heard three songs. Led by director Lilly Torrente, the fourth grade sang a song entitled, “Cat and Mouse” while the fifth grade performed the rhythmic song, “I Love Flowers.” Also, making her accompanist debut on piano during a song entitled, “Come on Everybody,” was Lower School Chorus member Sarah Killian ’18.

Accompanied by strings teacher Dr. Dorothy Sobieski, the Lower School Orchestra graced the audience with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” and more. Meanwhile, three members of the Forensics team — Anmol Anand ’21, Jessica Moser ’19 and Catherine Vucetic ’19 — took the show from music to vocals as each recited original pieces, works inspired by Upper School students like Veronika Fischer ’13, and poems reminiscent of childhood stories by author Shel Silverstein. Amongst each presentation, family and friends were also exposed to Ranney’s Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras, made-up of third through fifth grade students. Songs included, the Sound of Music’s “My Favorite Things” and an interactive, finger-snapping rendition of the “Addams Family.”

A true showcase of the year-round group and individual efforts seen by all students, Ranney musicians — Lower School to Upper School — should be proud of the performances they have put on throughout the school year.
