Robots and Rockets: Mechanics & Flight

Children intrigued by the mechanical design and function of robots and rockets needed look no further than Ranney Summer Programs to satisfy their curiosities this June and July. Robots and Rockets courses during sessions I and II of camp provided students grades four through six with the opportunity to work together on research and projects that not only set the stage for critical thinking, but also promoted fun!

Students worked hands-on in the computer lab and art studio during week one of each two-week course, where they combined science with the principles of motion and design to build robots and rockets. While student-programmed robots made using Lego Mindstorms battled one another during week two of each course, individual rocket kits were also assembled for flying and charting flight distances and patterns.

Three rockets built and decorated by students over each class's two-week duration included straw rockets powered by compressed air, water rockets powered by a mix of water and highly compressed air, and fuel rockets powered by A and B sized model engines. The classes used video to capture their rockets in flight and competed to see whose creation flew the longest amount of time. Overall, Ranney’s Robots and Rockets courses challenged the intellectual curiosities of each camper, allowing his/her critical thinking capabilities to reach new and exciting heights this summer.
