Summer Study Ends with Performances

Surrounded by family and friends, several summer students took to the stage in RSPA Panther Hall during closing performances on Friday, August 5, 2011. The performances not only marked Ranney’s last week of summer school, but also highlighted student progress in public speaking and drama throughout two courses offered this season.

Beginning at 10 a.m., Ranney’s Public Speaking class presented various speeches on research topics ranging from celebrities like Bruno Mars and Babe Ruth to places like Tokyo and Cronin’s Golf Resort. To best prepare students for their presentations, the two-week course — led by Ms. Angela Roccaro — focused on fundamentals of public speaking such as eye contact and expression, as well as consisted of mock interviews for practice purposes.

The third session of this summer’s Drama Insights: Character Acting and Scene Study course required students to create a modern-day fairytale on bullying that was performed amidst a live audience on Friday morning. Directed by Ms. Megan Sambataro of the Actor’s Playground — which educates students on improv, scene study and advanced acting techniques — four student-actors took to the stage as they represented classic fairytale characters such as Dorothy, Belle, Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood in a spoof entitled “A Nowadays Fairytale Story.”

Both the public speaking performances and drama skit ended with an eruption of applause from proud parents and teachers as students took a bow and sighed with relief at all they had accomplished in such a short period of time.
