Ranney students, alumni, faculty and friends saw the glaciers, geysers, mountains and lakes of Reykjavik Iceland during a six-day international excursion this August.
While faculty members and students have visited Paris, Tuscany and England over the past two years, Ranney decided to add “the Land of Fire and Ice” to its list of European countries and also extended a formal invitation asking any interested alumni to attend. The trip had something for each of Ranney’s 20 travelers. Activities ranged from exotic food tasting and shopping for famous woolen sweaters or blankets, to whitewater rafting, and “Golden Circle” bus tours that explored Thingvellir National Park, Gullfuss and Geyser. Last, but certainly not least, on the group’s agenda was also the August 20th Reykjavik Marathon.
Fourteen current and former Ranney Running Club members enjoyed breathtaking landscapes that included snow covered mountains, sparkling lakes and barren plains as they completed one of four races: the Reykjavik Marathon, a half marathon, a 10k or a 5k. Alumni Jeremy Lessing ’10 and Rachel Brodsky ’10 were among two of five runners to represent Ranney in the full marathon. Both achieved personal records as Jeremy ran a 3:55 — knocking more than 26 minutes off of his best time — and Rachel dropped 10 minutes to earn a time of 5:07. She crossed in stride with senior cross country team member Peter Goldberg. Also finishing strong on the rather hilly course was Upper School Dean of Students Noel Delgado, Ph.D. with a time of 4:06.
Taking on the half marathon and literally finishing one after the other were cross country captain Anthony Papetti ’12 (1:56), alumna Kelly Harmon ’09 (1:57), and alumnus Christopher Tomasetta ’10 (1:58). They were followed by Lower School faculty member Nancy King, who completed her seventh half marathon in 2:10.
Finally, overcome with wide-spread enthusiasm towards the sport of running, Board Member Stephen Papetti and family friend Robert Yawn completed a last-minute registration form and joined current Ranney athletes Lauren Harris ’12 and Jessica Natofsky ’12 with alumnus Christian Drappi ’10 in the 10k race. All participants not only celebrated their feat with fireworks at a Culture festival in the evening, but they also helped themselves to a much needed spa treatment at the Blue Lagoon — known for its world famous hot springs — the next day.
Congratulations to all race participants on a job well done!
