Parents’ Association Opens 25th Year with Back to School Coffee

Parents from across all three divisions gathered in RSPA Panther Hall on Thursday, September 15 as the 2011-12 Parents’ Association discussed many wonderful activities listed on its agenda this school year.

Entering its 25th year, the RSPA offers parents and students the opportunity to spend time together during fun-filled social and community events. Thursday’s meeting provided a showcase for such events as the school’s annual Fashion Show, Holiday Vendor Fair, Book Fair and Panther Ball as well as its Book Club, Panther Cubs program and Beach Sweep, and helped parents understand how to volunteer.

“Our volunteers are very special people,” said President of the Parents’ Association Mimi Keenan. “We have volunteer opportunities at all levels and I encourage you to get involved, as little or as much as your schedule allows.”

Mrs. Keenan recognized vast leadership in several honorary board members, who have not only served two or more years on the executive board, but who have also served as an integral part to the RSPA’s overall success. They included: Nancy Roberts, who has poured endless amounts of enthusiasm and spirit into every assignment throughout her seven years as a board member; Nancy Young, whose leadership over the past six years has led to a dramatic increase in the number of participants in and quality of the Panther Cubs athletic program; Tom Martin, who has acted as the RSPA’s Technology Advisor and in various other roles since 2007; Barbara Brand, who began her service on the RSPA executive board in 2005, and after serving one year, returned as treasurer in 2009; and Arzu Chu, who joined the RSPA executive board in 2009 and has worked just about every event. Also acknowledged was immediate past president Sue Grosso, who led the RSPA to extraordinary heights in volunteering and fundraising while building community and school spirit among Ranney families.

With that, Mrs. Keenan thanked all executive board members for their leadership. “You can never know just how much your service has meant to our community,” she said. “Every minute you contribute to RSPA makes a difference.”

According to Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D., he is confident that the Parents’ Association will continue to grow and develop as Mrs. Keenan — with help from other volunteers — continues to fulfill the role that former RSPA President Sue Grosso once held. “Sue Grosso led us through a watershed era of record breaking events, and we have a stellar leader in Mimi Keenan taking the reins this year,” he said.
