Ranney Ushers in Fall During Annual Homecoming / Fall Festival

Ranney School welcomed the first day of fall with an annual Homecoming Celebration on Friday, September 23rd and Fall Festival on Saturday, September 24th.

Parents, alumni, faculty and friends of Ranney kicked off the school’s annual Homecoming and Fall Festival weekend with a Welcome Back Cocktail Reception hosted by Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. and the school’s Board of Trustees in RSPA Panther Hall. Approximately 200 attendees celebrated an “Installation of Leadership” throughout the evening as they formally recognized the school’s new Board of Trustee President Jamie Price (father of Madison ’13) and Ranney School Parents’ Association President Mimi Keenan (mother of Conor ’13 and Shane ’17).

Mr. Price — who joined the Board in 2002 and devoted his leadership to numerous committees — called on all parents to contribute their time, treasure or talent to a school with tremendous opportunity. Mr. Price also encouraged each parent to rally behind the school as a community. “This will be our biggest advantage,” he said.

During her reflections on leadership, Mrs. Keenan noted the RSPA’s steadfast dedication toward Ranney and its goals for academic excellence since 1987. She happily accepted the opportunity to speak on behalf of every parent-volunteer that has aided in Ranney School’s tremendous growth over the past 25 years. “I will look back at the trust and vision of those past leaders, and do my very best to keep us moving forward,” said Mrs. Keenan.

Both Mrs. Keenan and Mr. Price then received their very own Ranney School varsity jackets and engraved gavels from Dr. Sykoff, who expressed his confidence that each will continue to carry the torch of honor as they lead the Ranney community. Dr. Sykoff also recognized new Board of Trustee members: Frank Austin ’88, Bob Chandler (father of Jillian ’21 and Morgan ’22), Scott Fischer (father of Veronika ’13, Francesca ’15 and Myles ’17) and Dr. Ann Ross (mother of Jillian ’17 and Nicholas ’17); and new RSPA Executive Board members: Ursula Ayers (mother of Noah ’17 and Sophia ’22), Tom Gavin (father of Ethan ’19 and Sophie ’21) and Tina Pflaster (mother of Montana ’13).

A cherished tradition, Fall Festival began early Saturday morning as Ranney’s youngest athletes took to the gym for Panther Cubs’ soccer and tennis. Several older athletes, meanwhile, headed to the Karagianakis Field for varsity games against Saddle River Day School and The Academy of St. Elizabeth with results as follows:
  • Varsity boys’ soccer vs. Saddle River Day School - Win, 1-0
  • Varsity girls’ soccer vs. Saddle River Day School - Loss, 4-3
  • Varsity field hockey vs. The Academy of St. Elizabeth - Win, 4-2
Possibly the most exciting game of the day came from the varsity boys’ soccer team, which secured a crucial win over Saddle River Day School following a last-minute goal scored by Alexander Karagianakis ’12 in double overtime. Goalie Madison Price ’13 obtained his second shutout of the season as he recorded 10 saves between the posts as well.

When not demonstrating their Panther Pride on the bleachers or Karagianakis field, all could be found enjoying the sights and sounds of Fall Festival near the front lawn. As the RSPA’s premiere fall community event each year, Ranney’s 2011 Fall Festival offered activities for children of all ages including horse and carriage rides, a petting zoo, inflatables, a DJ with “Ranney Idol” karaoke, pumpkin decorating, arts and crafts, carnival events and lots of food. “What a fabulous day Saturday turned out to be!” said the RSPA President Mimi Keenan. “We had a campus full of smiling children and happy families who had a wonderful time at this well-loved event.”

After a day full of fun activities, families began to drift off-campus by mid-afternoon as Fall Festival weekend came to yet another successful conclusion.
