Ranney’s very own Upper School Art Teacher Ave Maria Walwark and Fine Arts Department Chair Kate Greenberg each presented at an annual AENJ (Art Educators of New Jersey ) conference hosted in New Brunswick earlier this week. Held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, more than 800 New Jersey art teachers from both public and private schools across the state attended the organization’s largest professional development program.
While at the conference, Ms. Greenberg spoke of “The Power of Public Art: Murals for School and Community” and focused on the unique and powerful teaching moments that result when art is produced for public spaces. Examples throughout her presentation included Ranney’s 50th Anniversary mural once displayed in the school’s Panther Hall Gallery, a fireplace mural completed in Upper Head of School Paul Zanowski’s office, and a student-designed 12 foot menu displayed on a blackboard at Red Bank’s Lunch Break — an organization committed to serving the community.
Ms. Walwark, meanwhile, gave a presentation on “Creating Etchings and Intaglio Prints Using Safer Materials.” During her discussion, Ms. Walwark highlighted Ranney’s unique printmaking program, which teaches a sophisticated technique of High School-level etching that uses safe materials.
Congratulations to the Upper School Fine Arts Department — particularly to Ms. Greenberg and Ms. Walwark — for acting as true leaders in the field of art education and modeling best practices to teachers throughout the state. Both presentations were well-received and well-attended.
