More than 90 parents, alumni and friends of Ranney enjoyed crisp autumn weather and brilliant sunshine on the course and courts of Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck as they gathered at the school’s 16th Annual Golf and Tennis Classic on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.
Aside from hosting the event at a new location — the lavish Trump National Golf Club complete with a phenomenal course, wonderful tennis complex and luxurious 75,000 square foot Clubhouse — the day also featured several new contests and acknowledged honorary attendees.
One new contest, entitled “Beat the Panthers,” challenged golfers to out-drive Ranney varsity golf team coaches Ian McNamara and Michael Dunn as well as Ranney’s own pro, alumnus Charlie Kromann ’01. Seven participants successfully beat the Panthers, and were entered into a drawing for one winner to receive a $300 pro shop certificate. Another addition to the Classic, parents and friends not participating in golf or tennis were invited to take part in a challenging session of Mahjong in the Clubhouse as well as join the group for dinner and an awards reception later that evening.
Sixteen teams of parents — current and past — along with alumni, friends and staff took to the fairway for a team best-ball competition that covered over 18 holes of golf. Participants also tested their skills in hole-in-one competitions for the chance to win 2012 season tickets to the Lakewood BlueClaws or $10,000. This year’s golf champions shot a 69, finishing three under par, and consisted of Wayne Banks, Gary Mann, Bill Doran and John Stoddard. Second place went to the team of Richard Ryan, Peter Zipp, William Stanley and John Phillips, who shot a 72.
Off the course and on the courts, 28 avid tennis players paired up for a round robin tennis match. Divided into two flights, the winning pairs consisted of Monica Logani and Nancy Roberts from Flight ‘A’ and Kristen Gerhard and Marie Robinson from Flight ‘B,’ with each group receiving certificates to the pro shop as well as the coveted Headmaster’s Trophy for Tennis.
Following each event, participants and sponsors gathered in the Clubhouse for an awards dinner reception and silent auction that included foursomes to local courses, Cherry-T tennis bags, gift certificates to area vendors, sporting and symphony tickets and autographed sports memorabilia. Ranney School would like to extend a very special thank you to all those who sponsored the event and the volunteers who made the day such a success.
The Golf Classic Committee comprised of parents Barbara Brand, Karl Brand, Peter Gerhard, Kristen Gerhard, Bob Parker, David Poupard, Jennifer Santa Maria, Nancy Roberts, Scott Woska and Nadeem Zaidi, and alumnus
Charlie Kromann ’01, also played an integral role in recruiting sponsors and participants for the event. This year’s outing further acknowledged two families who have long-supported the Ranney Classic and community through their time and efforts — Karl and Barbara Brand with their company Brand Aromatics, and Peter and Kristen Gerhard.
