"And Then There Were None" Has Audience on Edge of Their Seats

Actors from the Upper School’s Performing Arts Department delighted parents, faculty and friends with their suspenseful rendition of Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” during three nights of mystery and mayhem in RSPA Panther Hall. Each evening — from Thursday, November 10 until Saturday November 12 — Ranney’s own Roberts Stage became a shocking scene set on a deserted island off the east cost of Devon, England.

"Every cast member developed a character complete with voice, accent and movement, who became real to the audience, transporting them from Panther Hall to a desolate house on Indian Island," said Performing Arts Teacher John Doyle.

After receiving invitations to the estranged house from an unknown source, the play’s 10 clueless dinner guests struggle to discover who-done-it before falling to a mysterious avenger that actually accuses each of inflicting death upon others. Just as the guests succumb one by one to a series of vicious murders described vaguely in a poem above the home's fireplace, 10 little Indian statues that rest atop the mantle also fall to the ground one at a time.

While eight little Indians did fall to their demise, the final four lines of the poem, which read: Two little Indian boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was one. One little Indian boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were none, never quite occur as the plot takes a turn for the better.

Aside from a great performance, hard work from Ranney’s sound, lights, set, costume and props crews also aided in successfully creating a sense of anticipation and mystery as well as depicting a smooth, professional look. Bravo to the cast and crew for putting on a heart-pounding performance that kept all in the audience on the edge of their seats!
