Panther Pride Student Round-up Series- 12/2/2011

Honoring current students Kyra Citron '16, Christa Dalmazio '12, Evelyn Giovine '12, Dylan Oster '24, Armani Rodriguez '19, Shane Keenan '17, Jacob Egol '19, Paul Cantave '19 and Brandan Whiteman '19, and alumna Michelle Drappi '11.
At Ranney, every child is known and valued. This past semester, many athletes and students from various grade levels have soared to new and outstanding heights. While we recognize the hard work and talent of all students at Ranney, a number have recently shared their notable highlights with us, and we congratulate them on these achievements:

KYRA CITRON (Brielle)
After learning that she would need to fulfill a service project for her Bat Mitzvah, Kyra Citron ’16 decided to organize a book drive within her school and community. In an effort to share one of her favorite pastimes with others, Kyra delivered nearly 2,000 books from every age range to Bridge of Books’ (BoB) Red Bank storage facility on November 5, 2011. It is Bridge of Books’ mission to provide an ongoing source of books to underprivileged and at-risk children throughout New Jersey. Kyra’s donation — the largest in BoB history — will support literacy skills and encourage a love of reading for those in schools, shelters and child advocacy groups. She also presented a check for $5,000 to BoB.

CHRISTA DALMAZIO (Leonardo)
Congratulations to Christa Dalmazio ’12, who placed 10th overall at the High School All-State Opera Auditions on Friday, October 21. From this audition, Christa earned a spot performing at an All-State Opera Festival Concert on Saturday, November 5, 2011. Additionally, she sang with the All-State Chorus at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on November 20. Both events were made possible in part by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), which also sponsors the Tri-M® Music Honor Society.

For her talents, the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) named Christa a 2012 YoungArts Merit Award winner on December 5, 2011. It is the NFAA’s mission to identify emerging artists and assist them at critical junctures in their educational and professional development, as well as raise an appreciation for and support of arts in American society. For 30 years, the YoungArts program has been identifying, recognizing and inspiring the nation’s most outstanding young artists and currently holds more than 16,000 alumni. After submitting a comprehensive digital portfolio with help from Performing Arts Chair Tess Nielsen, Christa placed in the top five percent of this year’s application pool — an extremely impressive achievement that speaks volumes to her talent and capabilities. Christa will not only receive a cash award, but also participate in YoungArts New York master classes at the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

EVELYN GIOVINE (Colts Neck)
Along with Performing Arts Chair Tess Nielsen, Evelyn Giovine ’12 attended the New Jersey Drama and Forensics League at Dumont High School on October 29, 2011. A “first” for the Upper School Forensics team, this marked Ranney’s first time attending the state high school forensics league, which brings together top drama students throughout the state.

DYLAN OSTER (Red Bank)
Ranney was once again honored by Artsonia — an international online art museum — as Dylan Oster ’24 was named a finalist for “Artist of the Week” on November 9th. A member of Barbara Levine’s Kindergarten art class, Dylan and her classmates were asked to create a fully illustrated hardcover book telling their very own story. Dylan’s drawing of her two best friends, which also appeared in her book, was entered into the drawing for students Pre-K through grade three. Approximately 25,000 images are submitted to the Artsonia website everyday! If named artist of the week, students receive a commemorative plaque from Artsonia and a $50 gift certificate from Blick Art Materials.

ARMANI RODRIGUEZ (Marlboro)
Armani Rodriguez '19
earned 12th place at a Central Jersey Chess Tournament held in Princeton on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

SHANE KEENAN (Tinton Falls)
Aside from participating in the Middle School soccer program at Ranney, Shane Keenan ’17 also played both striker and midfield positions on the Ocean Lightning Under 13 (U13) boys’ soccer team this fall - having recently won the prestigious 2011 New Jersey State Cup Tournament.

In addition to being named a CJAL Champion at Ranney, winning the NJ State Cup Tournament marks another great milestone in Shane’s soccer career. The Tournament included 48 of the best U13 academy and travel soccer teams throughout the state. Entering into the Tournament, Shane’s team ranked 16th in the state by the “GOT SOCCER” national ranking system. After winning five consecutive away games in north and south Jersey, the boys then defeated Stronghold Dynamo Soccer Club 3-2 in double overtime to clench the finals.

JACOB EGOL (Holmdel); PAUL CANTAVE (Englishtown); BRANDAN WHITEMAN (Tinton Falls)
Twenty-three Lower School students in grades four and five gathered in the Distance Learning Center to compete in a Ranney Geo Bee on Monday, December 5, 2011.

A national test available to students grades four through eight and hosted by the National Geographic Society, Jacob Egol ’19 was named this year’s school winner and will move on to take a qualifying test sometime in January. From there, he might also earn the chance to compete at a state Bee in March. Following Jacob in second place was Paul Cantave ’19, who garnered first at last year’s competition. Fifth grader Brandan Whiteman, meanwhile, took third place at this year’s event, which was moderated by Lower School teacher Sean Lang.

MICHELLE DRAPPI (Colts Neck)
A recent Ranney graduate from the Class of 2011, Michelle Drappi successfully completed a Capstone Project on Dental Anatomy and New Technologies before continuing her education at Franklin & Marshall College. Throughout the duration of her project, Michelle focused on the study of Dental Anatomy and Physiology, and applied that understanding to current technologies found in the field of dentistry. Using a CEREC machine — manufactured by Sirona Dental Company — she was able to demonstrate how the machine is used to fabricate a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured (CAD/CAM) dental restoration.

Thanks to the wide array of knowledge Michelle acquired while completing her Capstone Project, an article on her results was featured on pages 10 and 11 of CEREC, a magazine that is received by over 20,000 dentists. To view the article, please click here.
