In what is now becoming a tradition of award-winning for Middle School students and advisor Lorrie Benditt, the division’s literary magazine known as The MAG was once again honored - this time for excellence in two magazines issued during the 2010-11 school year.
This month, Ranney received word that the magazine’s Volume 13 issues entitled Fairytales & Fantasy and Summertime 2011 were granted a “First Prize with Special Merit” award from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA), as well as silver medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). While the cover of Fairytales & Fantasy depicts a colored pencil drawing of a dragon as done by Taylor Gill ’17 (Red Bank), the front cover of Summertime 2011 features a black and white photograph taken by eighth grade student Erin Kennedy of Spring Lake at the beach.
Under club founder, advisor and Middle School English teacher Lorrie Benditt, The MAG, which is published twice per school year, has earned one bronze, two silver and four gold awards from the CSPA since 2006! “This achievement is excellent evidence of the strength of our wonderful writing program, the dedication of our students to producing outstanding publications, and the strength of Lorrie Benditt’s leadership as a long-time advisor for this activity,” said Head of the Middle School David Fischer.
According to Ms. Benditt, she encourages the use of different design techniques each year, hence guaranteeing that The MAG will never lose its freshness or relevance. For instance, while editors-in-chief Adrienne Yang ’15 (Colts Neck) and Francesca Fischer ’15 (Rumson) used a parchment-colored background on every page throughout Fairytales & Fantasy, assistant layout editor Jacob Wahba ’16 (Holmdel) was the first to suggest the use of a black and white photograph rather than a drawing or graphic design on the cover of Summertime 2011.
Just last year, The MAG’s 50th Anniversary edition not only received a Myths and Glyphs “First Prize with Special Merit,” but was also named “Best Middle School Literary Art Magazine” – a recognition bestowed upon only three schools throughout the United States. “The MAG shows the superior talents of creative editors, writers, artists, photographers, layout/graphic designers, staff members and advisors,” concluded one ASPA judge.
Congratulations to all who contributed to Volume 13 of The MAG, and keep up the great work!
