Epee Fencing Captures 2nd District Championship

Ranney’s varsity fencing team competed in the NJSIAA/ Bollinger District Championships on Sunday, January 29, 2012, taking ninth overall, and earning several team and individual first place finishes as well.

One of the most prominent high school fencing events held throughout the United States, the NJSIAA/ Bollinger District Championships began on Sunday morning, as several of Ranney’s most versatile fencing members traveled to the very competitive District #2 Championships and qualifiers at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, New Jersey.

Matched up against teams from some of the most high-powered fencing programs in the state, the Panthers’ talented epee squad comprised of returning fencers Sam Tkach ’12 (Little Silver) and Thomas Hearne ’12 (Holmdel), and newcomer Christopher Farkouh ’14 (Rumson), earned a gold medal. This fine finish marked Ranney’s second consecutive District Championship win and NJSIAA Squad State Championship qualifier as the boys’ epee team earned 24 total victories — edging opponents from Montgomery (23 victories) and Watchung Hills (22 victories).

From the team, Sam Tkach garnered his second individual crown at the event. While Sam won the district title in 2010, last year’s title was captured by another Ranney fencer as Sam took third to qualify for the individual State Championship. With one loss at Sunday’s event, Sam's hopes of reclaiming his title came down to a fence-off against Mir Ali from Montgomery. “Sam’s concentration was superb as he landed the last touch beautifully,” said Ranney’s Head Coach Agota Balot. Joining Sam at this year’s individual State Championship will also be teammate Thomas Hearne, who finished third for the day.

Battling approximately 10 other schools, Ranney’s foil squad comprised of scholar-athletes Jake Bassinder ’13 (Point Pleasant), Joshua Goikhman ’15 (Morganville), Tarun Sangari ’15 (Morganville) and Prakhar Nair ’15 (Long Branch) also fought hard to land wins while using their very technical weapon. In the end, Jake finished seventh for the day.

Ranney’s epee squad will continue on to face other squads from competing schools throughout the state at the NJSIAA Squad State Championships on Saturday, February 25. “I'm very proud that our epee squad was able to defend our district championship and I'm looking forward to watching them defend our state championship title on the 25th as well," said Director of Athletics Thomas Moriau.

Meanwhile, Ranney’s own individual qualifiers, Sam Tkach and Thomas Hearne have truly earned the right to represent the school at the NJSIAA State Individual Championships on March 4, 2012.
