Varsity Swim to Compete in First-Ever Shore Conference Meet

In what marks a monumental achievement in the history of Ranney’s varsity swim team, eight members from this year’s boys’ and girls’ squads qualified to compete in the athletic program's first-ever Shore Conference Swim Tournament this weekend.

"I'm grateful that with this being our first year eligible to compete in the conference, we'll be represented by such talented scholar-athletes," said Aquatic Director and Head Coach Emmett Walling. “I am proud of these swimmers and look forward to seeing their best times at the completion of the meet.”

Representing Ranney’s varsity boys’ squad in seven separate events on Saturday, February 4 will be scholar-athletes Matthew Callahan ’13, Ronnie Geraghty ’14, Charles Sabaitis ’14 and Alex Lin ’12. While Matthew plans to join his three teammates in the second leg of the Tournament’s 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays, Ron will swim one additional event — the 500 Freestyle. As two Ranney School record holders, Charles Sabaitis and Alex Lin will also compete in their first-ever Shore Conference Tournament this Saturday. Currently a record holder in both the 200 Individual Medley and 400 Freestyle at Ranney, Charles Sabaitis will swim the boys’ 200 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle as well as join his teammates in two Relay events. Meanwhile, a four-year varsity swimmer at Ranney, senior Alex Lin currently holds five school records in various events including the 400 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke and 200 Medley Relay. Before heading off to college this fall, he will have the honor of being one of the first Panthers to ever represent his school in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle at a Shore Conference meet. Alex will also play an especially crucial role in this Saturday’s Relay events, already holding records in both the 200 Freestyle and 400 Freestyle Relay at Ranney as well.

Qualification for the prestigious Shore Conference Tournament is determined based on times acquired in specific events throughout the season. Although sophomore Madison Boyan qualified for seven individual events at this year’s girls’ Tournament to be held Sunday, February 5, she settled with swimming the 100 Fly and 500 Freestyle. Madison will join teammates Veronika Fischer ’13, Natalie Cantave ’12 and Melissa Cantave ’12 in the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relay as well. Similar to fellow Panther Ronald Geraghty, Veronika Fischer also qualified for the Shore Conference meet’s 500 Freestyle event. Natalie and Melissa Cantave will, in the meantime, compete in two individual events each: the 50 Freestyle and 100 Fly, and 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. With a Ranney record in the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relay, as well as the 200 Medley Relay, the sisters will certainly play an integral part in the success of Sunday’s relay team.

"As we steadily approach the conclusion of a very successful season with many records broken, there is no better time than now to showcase Ranney swimming," added Coach Walling.

Ranney’s athletics program was granted general membership within the state’s renowned Shore Conference on April 29, 2011. Although the school will not receive formal induction into the Conference until the fall of 2012, both squads will make their Shore Conference debut at the Ocean County YMCA this weekend, hoping to return with gold, and leave behind a first impression that other teams within the new Conference will never forget.
