Boys Swim Team Wins Third Straight Middle School Invite

The Athletic Department hosted its 4th Annual Ranney School Swim Invite in the Aquatic Center on Wednesday, February 15, 2012.

Despite a very competitive meet, which featured several Invitational records, personal bests and school records, the boys’ squad from Ranney still managed to place first ahead of competitors from Pingry School, Newark Academy, The Wardlaw-Hartridge School, Pennington School and Oak Hill Academy. From the boys’ team, eighth grader Zachary DiGiaro won the 100-meter Freestyle in 100.26 — setting both a new Invitational and school record in the process. Teammates Liam Fitzmaurice ’17 and Matthew Torpey ’17 finished second and third, respectively.

The Invite’s 100 Individual Medley was also won by DiGiaro, who edged out swimmer Chris Centrella of Oak Hill Academy 1:11.79 to 1:12.16. Teaming up with DiGiaro for the final event of the day was fellow eighth grader Jerome Cohen, along with seventh graders Fitzmaurice and Torpey, who conquered the 200 Freestyle Relay in dramatic fashion — touching out Pingry School 2:11.32 to 2:11.37. DiGiaro split a season best, 27.14, in the final 50 meters of this Relay event as well.

Other fine performances on part of the boys’ squad throughout the night were had by sixth grade sensation Toby Savage, Thomas Bruno ’16 and Keenan Maher ’17. While Savage dropped more than three seconds off of his 25 Freestyle time, — claiming fourth place in 15.07 and earning 11 points for the Panthers — Bruno finished second with a time of 43.25 in the 50-meter Backstroke. Additionally, Maher took second in the 50 Breaststroke, touching in 43.60.

With all scores tallied and record times recorded, it was concluded that the boys’ squad of Ranney School had risen victorious for the third Invite in a row, capping off yet another incredible and undefeated season. The final scores were as follows:

Ranney- 288

Pingry- 260.5

Newark Academy- 157

Wardlaw Hartridge- 157

Oak Hill Academy- 156.5

Pennington- 104

On the girls’ end of the pool, the Lady Panthers battled with Pingry from start to finish, oftentimes only finding Pingry ahead by 10. Following the evening's Breaststroke event and heading into the final race of the Invite, however, Ranney took a one-point lead. In what proved one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of any Ranney Swim Invite, the girls of Pingry captured first place with a blazing time of 2:00.08. Although Ranney’s Relay team — comprised of Kate Crilly ’16 (32.35), Taylor Gill ’17 (32.92), Abigail Boyan ’18 (31.95) and Audra Smires ’16 (28.93) — only finished second with a time of 2:06.15, it did shatter the school’s record by more than four seconds.

Crilly, Boyan and Smires also teamed with eighth grade swimmer Michelle Krameisen to win the girls’ 100 Freestyle Relay in a record time of 59.89 early on in the meet. Other impressive swims throughout the very close Invitational came from Rachel Staats ’16, who scored key points in both the 100 Freestyle and 50 Backstroke, Grace Hofferber ’17 (14.86) and Aidan Denver-Moore ’17 (15.90), who finished second and third in the 25 Freestyle, Audra Smires (1:04.69), who took second in the 100 Freestyle, Grace Cornell ’17 (46.31), who placed eighth in the 50 Breaststroke, Abigail Boyan (37.44), who garnered third in the 50 Backstroke, and Taylor Gill (39.73) along with Peri Rohl ’16 (40.23), who finished second and third in the 50-meter Butterfly.

Ranney's Middle School girls's swim squad has much to be proud of as so many of its members accomplished goals and finished the season strong on Wednesday night. Final girls’ scores from the Ranney Swim Invite were:

Ranney- 304
