US Celebrates Panther Pride Week

Before departing for an extra long President’s Day weekend, the Upper School participated in its annual Panther Pride Week.

Beginning Monday, February 6 and hosted by members within the Athletic Department, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors took to the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics (GPA) for a banner-decorating contest. With each class choosing its own unique theme — Panther Pride, school spirit, leadership or character — beautifully adorned banners depicted such taglines as the “junior mints” and “sophomore snowmen.” Locker pods were also decorated with corresponding class colors and themes.

Leaving the GPA filled with black (seniors), green (juniors), white (sophomores) and red (freshman) banners on Thursday, students then participated in several relay races on Friday, February 10, 2012. After competing in events that included a sprint relay, eight-legged race and more, it was determined that the juniors had accumulated the most — 95 points — for first place.

The fun continued on Tuesday, February 14, as each class headed to RSPA Panther Hall for a Quiz Bowl tournament consisting of 12 rounds and six different categories spanning geography, sports, science, history and more. Seated atop the Roberts’ Stage, four teams of three eagerly answered questions like “Which is the smallest of the Great Lakes in surface area?” and “Who was the only American to become Vice President and President after resignations?” as posed by emcee and Physical Education teacher Brian Dolan. In the end, a junior team made-up of Jake Bassinder, Benjamin Puvalowski and Roey Hadar took first with five correct answers. Meanwhile, the freshman, sophomore and senior classes all tied for second.

Each class returned to Panther Hall armed and ready with instruments including the harp, drums, piano, guitar and symbols during a Battle of the Bands assembly the following day as well. While the “#typicalfrosh” group opened the show with its performance of “The Twitter Song” sung by students George Timmins and Charlotte DeMarco, the “get rich or die Mayan” seniors closed the afternoon’s assembly with a high-energy rendition of Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” performed by Christa Dalmazio, Tor Miller, Hannah Simpson, Val Kharkover, Sam Tkach and Eric Chiang. It was the sophomore class, however, with band mates Ronald Geraghty, Noah Goldstein and Brandon Flynn, that “came together” and earned first following a performance of the Beatles’ very own “Come Together.”

Panther Pride Week festivities came to a close at a Dodge Ball tournament on Thursday, February 16. Although both the junior and freshman class battled it out for first during the final game of the day, it was the juniors who ultimately reigned victorious. Other point-earning competitions held throughout the week included the completion of a three-page essay encompassing “The Ranney Scholar-Athlete: Leading Life With Knowledge, Vision, Honor,” class color contests and most spirited awards.

In the end, the final standings were as follows:
1st place- Juniors
2nd place- Seniors
3rd place- Sophomores
4th place- Freshmen
